DNA is an abbreviation for `deoxyribonucleic acid'. DNA is an acid inside the chromosome part of every cell in every living being. A DNA strand is approximately 3 meters long but is coiled and compacted inside the chromosome. There are about 100 trillion cells in our human body.
Each DNA is a strand of proteins that act as the instruction manual for making each cell do its unique job in the body. We can think of DNA as being each part of an engine, and each part does its unique job to make the overall engine operate the way it does.
- Along the DNA strand are groups of proteins that work together. These groups are called "genes". The genes determine how a living body develops, grows, and functions.

When a man and woman have sex they each provide a sample of their DNA, which combines to make a unique baby with half the genes from each parent. The process of passing on one's genes from parent to child is called "heredity".
